RecoverMistake Ritual
A small action, such as a breath and a word, that marks the error as over.
After a slip, the mistake tends to hang around in your head and spoil the next few minutes. Tennis players towel off, footballers clap twice, surgeons reset their stance. A short, deliberate ritual draws a line: that happened, it is finished, the next thing starts now.
How to use it
- Pick one small physical action: brushing your hand down your leg, straightening your notes, clicking your pen.
- Pair it with one breath out and one word, such as 'next' or 'reset'.
- Use it immediately after any error in practice, big or small.
- Keep it the same every time so it becomes automatic.
- On the day, run it the moment you notice a slip, before you decide anything else.
Example
A dental nurse who fumbles an instrument mid-procedure lowers their hands to their lap, breathes out and thinks 'next'. Three seconds later they are passing the right instrument, steadily.
Watch out
- Using the ritual to skip a real fix. Mark the error over, then decide whether it needs handling.
- Making it showy. It should be invisible to anyone not looking for it.
Your Reset Trigger can be the action. Follow with Triage The Error, and with Catch The Spiral if the thought keeps nagging.
